The Life Of Vergie Winters

In the 1930s, they were so fond of martyred women, quietly sacrificing for an illegitimate child, staying silent and hidden while the father followed his destiny in politics. While that set-up always steams me, it also usually makes for a fascinating film. Ann Harding is the woman in question here, with her quiet grace and unsettling mystique anchoring the film while John Boles steals all the glory. I don't know why this lopsided arrangement makes for such intriguing entertainment, but it gets me every time. Both stars are quite good, along with the supporting cast (including a very young Lon Chaney, Jr.) of town biddies and gossip-mongers. The smalltown life is sold solidly both in visual aesthetic and character dynamics. And the almost inevitable conclusion still comes as a shock and makes for a bang-up finale. It would make an on-the-nose double feature with Frisco Jenny, for sure.
